Berkshire 9th & 10th Graders Experience STEM Beyond the Classroom

Sometimes, a scheduling challenge becomes the perfect opportunity for something greater. With state testing underway, Berkshire’s 9th- and 10th-grade students spent the day outside the building but fully immersed in meaningful learning.

The result was a full-day STEM experience that extended far beyond the traditional classroom. Students engaged in hands-on, real-world exploration that sparked curiosity, critical thinking, and discovery in ways no classroom worksheet could replicate.

First Stop: Great Lakes Science Center

Located along the shores of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland, the Great Lakes Science Center is a world-class destination for curious minds. Students spread across multiple floors of interactive exhibits, investigated topics ranging from weather systems and electricity to aerospace engineering and environmental science. The experience encouraged exploration, experimentation, and independent learning at every turn.

Next Up: MAGNET (Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network)

From the science center, students headed to MAGNET, a dynamic hub where modern manufacturing, design, and innovation come to life. If the Science Center showed students what’s possible, MAGNET showed them how to build it.

Students got an inside look at cutting-edge manufacturing processes, prototyping technologies, and the kinds of careers that blend creativity with technical skill. Likewise, students had a blast on MAGNET’s hands-on innovation playground. Many students walked away with a completely different picture of what “manufacturing” means in the 21st century.

Throughout the day, teachers and chaperones encouraged students to observe, question, and connect their experiences to real-world STEM fields.

Authentic learning experiences like this are difficult to replicate within four walls, but they come to life when students are allowed to explore the world firsthand. What began as a logistical necessity became one of the most impactful and memorable days of the school year.

This experience is a powerful reminder that learning doesn’t have to be confined to a classroom. Sometimes, the most meaningful lessons happen in places where innovation is actively unfolding.

We’re proud of how our Berkshire 9th and 10th-graders showed up with curiosity, enthusiasm, and open minds; leaving with expanded horizons and new inspiration for what lies ahead.

Here’s to turning every challenge into an opportunity, and every outing into a learning day!
